Case Studies
The following case studies are real examples of how our expertise can benefit your training and racing.
Workouts planned around your schedule
Bill is a salesperson with a heavy travel schedule and family commitments. Based on Bill's upcoming schedule, Coach Lauren designs his plan to account for his travel knowing bike and swim workouts can be difficult to perform on business trips. Having to find ways to train while on the road as a professional triathlete and having a family of her own helps Lauren understand the needs of professionals and parents.
Race strategy
In 1998, Coach Lauren was racing in Cleveland, OH against the likes of Barb Lindquist, Karen Smyers, and 2000 USA Olympian Gail Laurence. The course was a loop swim, and then 13 laps of a rectangular bike course, followed by a run along the same roads as the bike. Since Lauren knew she would lose time to a strong swimmer like Barb, Coach Todd figured time could be made up in the corners on the bike. If Lauren could ride two or three seconds faster than the others through each of the over 50 corners, she could gain back almost two minutes total without expending any additional energy. With his background in bicycle racing, Todd taught Lauren proper cornering technique and designed workouts allowing her to practice her skills. At the race, Lauren almost made up the 90-second swim deficit to Barb on the bike. Though Barb kept her lead on the run and eventually won, Lauren preserved enough energy to have a great run and hold off the others for second place.
Finishing the Hawaii Ironman with a history of injuries
Fred is an athlete with a history of injuries that limited his training and racing, but he signed up for the Ironman Hawaii lottery and received a spot. Lauren's physical therapy background allowed her to analyze Fred's biomechanical problems, and she created a strength and stretching program to address his weaknesses. In addition, she designed a training plan to slowly build Fred up over the months leading to the race. Fred crossed the line and now is the owner of a coveted Ironman Hawaii finisher's t-shirt.
Race nutrition
Coach Lauren has had difficulties in past races, from upset stomachs to fading near the end of the run after a strong race to fainting in the heat. With his physiology background, Coach Todd researched the medical and exercise science literature for race day nutrition strategies. After some trials, Lauren took her new nutrition plan to the 2004 USA National Long Course Triathlon in Muncie, IN. She led off the bike and ran strong all the way to the finish to finish first, holding off multiple Ironman champion Heather Gollnick.
