Who is this Todd guy?
|
Who is Todd, you ask? He's Lauren's infamous husband and this site's webmaster. When he's not racing himself, he's probably at work!
I started racing bikes in the late 1980s during college, and after a few road races (and road rash) found the weekly club time trials run by some friends in Racine County and the Two Tyred Wheelmen in Madison to be more to my liking. I started running in the winter to stay in shape and was soon challenged by a triathlete friend to a bike-run biathlon in 1989, my first real multisport race.
The same friend challenged me to a triathlon, so the first triathlon I signed up for was in the spring of 1990. Fortunately, I forgot my helmet, so I didn't have to endure what turned out to be a rainy, cold, and windy day.
He kept bugging me, so we signed up for an Olympic distance triathlon in Madison that summer. The week before the race I did the math and realized the 1.5k swim was almost one mile. This was a problem since I think the farthest I ever swam before was a half mile and that was with rests at the end of the pool lane!
Nevertheless, I was able to swim the whole way without stopping (unlike a lot of people who dolphined and walked their way through the shallow water) and had a nice clear transition to find my lonely bike. I burned myself out trying to make up time on the bike and ended up taking a lot of walking breaks on the run. I ended up finishing near the back of the pack, which was something I was not used to. I didn't know her at the time, but Lauren had also been in the race.
I told myself after the race this would be my first and last triathlon ever. I was not much of a swimmer. So, I went back to time trials and another biathlon. The same friend kept harassing me about my slow triathlon, which really fired up my competitive juices (and this takes a lot, ask Lauren). I joined the local YMCA and started swimming laps over the winter. I mostly concentrated on bike racing the spring of 1991, did really well on my first few races and moved up to Category 3. This helped me when I signed up for a spring triathlon and beat my friend's PR. This combined with my meeting Lauren led to my "retirement" from cycling and a new sporting career in multisport. I even spent one year as a mediocre duathlon pro (last pro in my first race, second or third from last the next), not quite having the running speed to keep up with the Greg Watsons and Michael Tobins of the world.
I still prefer run-bike duathlons over triathlons, but find triathlons are a never-ending physical challenge. The past few years I found myself entering longer and longer races, but may stick to the shorter stuff after suffering through some of those long races in 2003 due to lack of training time!
